On Saturday 3rd September 2011 we staged what we believe to be the first ever World Championship Hop Pocket Race. This unique event took place again in 2012 and 2013. Now in its fourth year, the event continues to be sponsored by the award winning Wye Valley Brewery and the internationally renowned hop merchant Charles Faram & Co. who provide the World Championship Trophies to the winning teams and mementos to each team member in recognition of their world-beating achievement. The Race
The event involved teams of 4 carrying a full size hop pocket against the clock around a road course of 553 yds and an obstacle in Bromyard Town centre. The Hop Pockets were filled to a weight of 70 kilos for the senior race and 50 kilos for the ladies and junior races.
There were 3 classes in the race:Senior Open to teams of 4 people of any age and gender Ladies Open to teams of 4 women of any age Junior Open to teams of 4 people under 16 of any gender
Each team raced for the honour of being the World Champion in their category. In addition to the trophies, Wye Valley Brewery presented award winning beer to the winning Senior and Ladies teams. Each member of the winning junior team received a £5 voucher.
Taking part in this unique event provided every business, club etc. with an unrivalled marketing, promotional, recruitment opportunity; and, who could possibly resist becoming the next World Champion?? A professional photographer was on hand to record the event and photographs were made available to all teams and team members for promotional purposes. In 2013 photographer Adie Turford took pictures of every team on the course, and of each vehicle in the parade. These can be seen and are for sale on his website www.adiesphotography.co.uk.
The Hop Pocket World Championship is the only event of its kind in the world – don’t miss future championships!
